My journey
Before I was at Browne I was doing public accounting. I wanted to switch with something that would provide me more time with my wife and dog. Work life balance was a priority for me, and I wanted to work with great people and get better insight into day-to-day accounting. When the whole hiring process started, my first meeting was with Warren Browne. That was a great introduction. Normally you don’t meet with the CEO right away! The Interview process was so smooth; I met with people every other day. They were super friendly, inviting, and responsive. The company even let me take a week off so I didn’t have back-to-back busy seasons.
Tyree Chambers is an Accounting Manager. He joined Browne Consulting after years of working as a public accountant for a large firm.
I had zero experience in life science. My main area at my last company was technology. I think in my first week here there was a PowerPoint for two hours about the biotech industry, and who the players are, but to be quite honest I learn the most by chatting with the clients, getting to know what they’re working on, and sitting on budget meetings. A month in, a client had a budget recast, and I was driving that meeting. You get immediate exposure and learn as you go.
Now, I feel like I’m contributing to the greater good. Our clients are coming up with medications and treatments helping the greater good. I’m not just an accountant, I am the outstretched arm for some of these biotech companies.
I want to point out Dan Goddard, our Operations Controller. He set up a coffee meeting during my second week to show me websites where I could learn about life science. He has 17 years experience in life science, and he was kind enough to go over terminology, accounts I’ll be using, and so forth. I relish that relationship a lot, and I know Dan will always carve out time for questions.
It doesn’t get better than this. I still work a good amount, but my mood is a lot better. I’m way less stressed, and I’m just enjoying what I’m doing. I’m a big learner, and that’s what I’m getting here. When I started, it was very high paced. It was very nerve racking because it was my first job in a virtual environment. That fear was eradicated early on. By day three I was already handling client work shadowing my supervisor. Having that freedom and help early on helped me flourish.
I also want to stress the fact that Warren is very open to comments from senior accounts. When I come up with ideas for software improvements or programs we can use, he is actively listening. I feel like I’m being heard. Being at a smaller company, obviously it’s a little risky, but it’s super rewarding. We’re growing as our clients are growing. Their success is our success.
Lastly, you need to come in open minded, and to really rethink the whole accounting world, especially coming from an audit perspective. Now you’re on the other side. You’re preparing the data, booking the journal entries, and getting so much more experience knowing how accounting works by just doing it. I’ve gotten so much client exposure, and I’ve gotten more comfortable talking to strangers and leading meetings without relying on supervisors. It’s really helped me grow as a professional.
